Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay learned to love art through the aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed it to DuVernay. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was inspired to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. While she was still studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish at the home of a member of the jury. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in small production studios right after she graduated from school. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
